With summer weather upon us, the Department of Public Safety would like to remind everyone of the State Law and City Ordinance that govern the use of fireworks. The City hopes that all residents and visitors will abide by these regulations in an effort to keep our city safe.

Important facts:
• The use of consumer fireworks, as defined in the Michigan Fireworks Safety Act of 2011, and City Ordinance, is limited to the day before, the day of, and the day after a federal holiday.
• Fireworks cannot be sold to, possessed, or used by minors.
• Fireworks cannot be ignited, discharged, or used on public property, school property, church property, or property of another without that organization's or person's express permission.
• In the City of Petoskey, the use of consumer fireworks between the hours of 1:00 A.M. and 8:00 A.M. is always prohibited.
• Violations of City Ordinance will be investigated and violators issued civil infractions when necessary.
• The use of Sky Lanterns is prohibited by the International Fire Code and City Ordinance, even on days when consumer fireworks are permitted.
• Consumer fireworks include: roman candles, bottle rockets, and other items that leave the ground.
