John Murphy

Mayor

murphyMayor John Murphy, 66, was elected to serve as Mayor for the City of Petoskey in 2016, 2017 and again in 2018. Mayor Murphy was first elected to serve a two-year Councilmember term by Second Ward residents that began in 2013 and again in 2015. He has also served on the City of Petoskey's Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Commission. Mayor Murphy is an Educational Consultant with Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC). He holds a Master's Degree in Education and attended Grand Valley State University, Central Michigan University and North Central Michigan College. He has two adult children Colin and Morgan. Kate Marshall
Ward 1 Representative

kmarshallCouncilmember Marshall, 73, had served First Ward residents from 1996-2000, and again was elected to serve a two-year term beginning in 2012, 2014, 2016 and again in 2018. Councilmember Marshall also served a three year term as Mayor from 2001-2003. Councilmember Marshall is co-owner of American Spoon Foods. She holds two Masters Degrees in Education and Fine Arts from the University of Detroit and Wayne State University. Councilmember Marshall has served as an Election Inspector for the City of Petoskey and is a former City of Petoskey Planning Commission member. Councilmember Marshall is married to Justin Rashid, has three children and three grandchildren. She has resided in the City of Petoskey for 39 years. Councilmember Marshall may be reached at:

Suzanne Rosenthal Shumway, Ph.D.

ShumwayCouncilmember Suzanne Rosenthal Shumway, 58, was elected to serve as Second Ward Councilmember for the City of Petoskey in 2018. Councilmember Shumway was a full-time English and Speech professor at North Central Michigan College for 13 years; now she teaches a variety of classes as an adjunct professor, both at NCMC and at the Petoskey District Library.  She has a Ph.D. in English Literature from The University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Arts in English from the University of California at Irvine and a BA in French and English from Rice University.  Councilmember Shumway is married to Michael Shumway, with whom she has three children.   She has resided in the Petoskey area for close to 20 years. Grant Dittmar
Ward 3 Representative

DittmarCouncilmember Dittmar, 66, was first elected to serve a two-year term by Third Ward residents that began in 2012, 2014, 2016 and again in 2018. Councilmember Dittmar owns and operates Dittmar's Timepieces (Chronotech), established in Petoskey since 1978. He holds a B.S.E in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Mr. Dittmar has volunteered time and equipment to help produce over 150 videos of City meetings for TV and the Internet. He is also Council President of his church, and performs trumpet with the Jordan Valley Band. Councilmember Dittmar has resided in the City of Petoskey for 61 years. Lindsey Walker
Ward 4 Representative

WalkerCouncilmember Walker, 44, was elected to serve as Fourth Ward Councilmember for the City of Petoskey in 2018. Councilmember Walker has been with Emmet County Recycling since 2007 as recycling outreach, market development and commercial accounts, and advocates passionately for all things waste reduction.  She currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Northern Michigan Community Action Agency and the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce.  She is part of the Thriving Petoskey initiative and is very passionate about affordable housing, renewable energy and environmental activism.  Councilmember Walker was born and raised in Petoskey, graduated from Petoskey High School in 1992, holds an undergraduate degree in Women's Studies from Antioch College, Yellow Springs Ohio and a Masters in International Development from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont.  She has two children Sofia age 19 and Hiram age 12.  The three of them are living "small" on Emmet Street where she is a new homeowner and can usually be found working on her fixer upper.
